The Complete Jersey History of the Los Angeles Kings

All of the Kings jersey fronts have now been added to the database. Including the beloved Burger King alternate. In total it looks like 23, with number 24 expected this month when they introduce the new third.

You can find them all on this page:

    Get your Vote On...on JDB.com

    UPDATED - THE RESULTS
There were a total of 815 votes cast, and I'm sure they were all cast by different people.... Although I wouldn't say it was a fair poll, it did accurately predict the winner:
    Obama: 400 votes
    McCain: 365 votes
    Nader: 50 votes

Because it is only once every four years, and because it more or less determines the king of planet Earth...AND because this time around it may actually effect all of our lives in a positive (hopefully) way...I have added both of the candidates in this year's election to the database in the form of campaign t-shirts.

You can vote for them by adding them to a signature, creating an iPhone wallpaper, creating an avatar etc., as well as by simply clicking the green plus button or using the "voting area" on the top of the home page.

Unlike the state of Florida I don't care how often you vote, or who you vote for...election results will be found on the home page at some point after the real polls close...

    Philadelphia, and what this means

The fact that this World Series had the lowest viewer count in history doesn't matter. The fact that Bud Selig, FOX, MLB and the weather nearly ruined it doesn't matter. The fact that it had been 25+ years no longer matters. The only thing that matters is that Philadelphia won.

This isn't the beginning of a new chapter, it is the end of a long, terrible, and at times tragic, book of suffering. For the first time in my life, and for a lot of others out there, I woke up this morning not being from a city of losers. Today, for millions of people, the curse is broken and the war is over.

Tomorrow at noon the amount of emotion in Philadelphia will be at a level that is beyond comprehension. It will be the collective breathing out of a city that is been holding it's breath since April of 1983. Literally millions of people that have been desperate for a reason to celebrate and have been waiting to do so for so long that it had become an impossibility. And now, after more than 100 seasons of Flyers, Sixers, Eagles and Phillies games - everything we've been through has been justified. That parade, that Phillies win, this moment, are what everyone has been dreaming about all of their lives.

It's not that the Phillies won the World Series that matters, it's that Philadelphia finally won something. It's not been an easy ride. For anyone under 30, all they've basically known all their lives is one defeat after another. I don't remember when the Sixers won the last championship, but I don't remember ever not being a fan of Philadelphia sports. It's defined who I am, without it this website wouldn't exist, I wouldn't be writing this, and this wouldn't be one of the greatest days of my life.

I can't be at the parade tomorrow. I'd do anything to be able to get back, unfortunately living in Sweden prevents it, but I'll be celebrating here. Drinking beer and thinking back on everything that has happened over the last 25 years to make this what it is...and trying to comprehend how much this changes everything.

Out there on the blogosphere there are no doubt tons of posts like this today. People trying to put into words what they feel, and it's not easy. It's hard to even straighten out the thoughts in your head. Not much in life can compare to this. I think my wedding probably comes closest for me. To be honest, being a Philadelphia sports fan, we aren't really used to having anything to celebrate. When I look back, before last night at 9:58PM, all I see is heartbreak.

To get here, where we are today, we had to go through: the Phillies losing in '83 in the World Series, they would lose again ten years later, for 14 years after that they didn't even make the playoffs, the terrible Eagles teams of the 80's when people jumped ship, the death of Jerome Brown, Veterans Stadium, the Fog Bowl, going 3-13 in 1998, losing 3 straight Conference Championships, losing the 2004 Super Bowl, watching the Flyers go more than 30+ years without winning the Cup, watching them lose two Finals to Edmonton in the mid-80's, including game 7 in 1987, the death of Pelle Lindbergh, going 5 years without even making the playoffs between 1989 and 1994, getting swept by Detroit in the '97 Finals, watching them win a total of 22 games last season, the Sixers making one Final appearance in 25 years, missing the playoffs for 7 straight seasons between 1991 and 1998, and god knows how many games we lost that we could have won. As of yesterday, none of it matters.

Here's to everyone who has been through the last 25 years, make it memorable over the next couple days. You deserve this.

    Islanders Unveil New Third Jersey

Yesterday the Islanders became the umpteenth team this season to make the lateral maneuver of bringing out something we've seen before. In this case a modern update to - not the Cup era jerseys - but the design the club wore from their inception in 1972 till 1977.

They are a pretty accurate representation for the most part. The originals did have the tie downs, and the later versions used very similar numbers. One exception being that the Islanders never had nameplates on these, which is overlookable considering the majority of teams didn't put them into normal use until they became mandatory in 1977.

So, that's all and good. No huge surprises here, no shockingly dramatic changes, no major gaffs on the reproduction/vintage update thing....except for one. Actually a pair of them. Yes, people, the Reebok sock anomaly continues. Diagonal stripes, vertical stripes, and now broken stripes. See image to right.... For reasons that I'm sure are only explained by whatever bizarre form of hose-looming machine Reebok uses - the stripes stop about an inch from each other on the back. Which even the least aesthetic-minded person is going to find rather displeasing.

More on the whole song and dance on the Islanders site here (including whacky stop motion rotation of Guerin):

    Islanders New Jerseys Page

These will debut Saturday on "Throwback Night" against Montreal.

Anybody want to start a blog detailing the absurdity of Reebok screwing up something as simple as a pair of hockey socks? There is plenty of content out there.

Update on the Winter Classic Retro Jerseys

As is often the case the previous information regarding what the Red Wings and Blackhawks would be wearing on New Year's Day in the Winter Classic was wrong. What they are actually going to be sporting are these:

This was announced by the NHL today, more info is available on their site here. With links, a couple of images and pre-order information.

The Red Wings jersey is based on what was then the Detroit Cougars. The first incarnation of the team in Detroit. It was only used for one season in 1926-27. In 1929 the Cougars became the Falcons, and in 1932 the Falcons were renamed the Red Wings.

This is by no means an actual reproduction. On the Wings site they say it is "inspired" by this jersey. For one the D is not the same, which is strange. They added the laceups, which was a bit gratuitous since they wore actual sweaters in the 1920's. And, to top it off they've added the modern winged wheel logo to the shoulders. I guess that's to assure people of what team it is.

Much the same can be said about the Blackhawks jersey which is inspired by the one to the right that was used between 1935-37. The original version of this jersey, used the season before, was actually white instead of tan. The crest on the Winter Classic jersey is actually a logo used between 1937 and 1955. It was never used on that particular jersey, but rather the barber pole ones. Same with the tiedowns here, if you want to gauge accuracy, this sweater design never used them.

All in all it's still a very cool thing that the NHL is continuing not only with the outdoor game, but with the use of vintage/retro/inspired jerseys in the games. Also nice to see Detroit and Chicago bring back two that haven't been seen in 70+ years. It's a shame they didn't do more for accuracy, but I guess you can only expect so much...

These are both in the database for anyone interested.

IceTime 4.0 Available For Yahoo! Widgets (NHL Widget)

The first release of IceTime 4.0 for Yahoo! Widgets is now available. I have not had a chance to test it on a PC, however since the engine is cross platform there shouldn't be too many differences. If you do find any problems, specifically with the dock - since that's where they usually occur - please let me know in either the forum, via this post or by e-mail: hockeywidgets@gmail.com

Chapter 1 - In which Adobe tries to sell me CS4 and fails.

Or a long diatribe where I use a lot of apostrophes in an attempt to come to grips with what CS4 means.

Yesterday morning I spent (I should say gave) two and a half hours to Adobe and listened to their "evangelists" attempt to sell me CS4. I have done the same for CS3...and CS2, as have thousands of others who work with their products. This time around I have to say it; "Adobe, it's not you it's me. No, that's wrong. It is you."

If you work with just about anything that involves imagery then you have a relationship with Adobe. Mine goes back to Photoshop 6...and is currently residing with CS3. You really haven't got much choice in the matter. You could get by with alternatives however, for compatibility reasons among others, you'd have to be rather sadistic to attempt it. No, you're stuck with Adobe, as am I, as are millions of others. Every day. Try as you may, you can't dump Adobe for someone else.

Right now Adobe and I are in that phase where we aren't really talking to each other. I do some yelling here and there and Adobe pretends to listen via Crash Report. (If you don't actually send these, I suggest you start. It's very therapeutic.) That was up until yesterday anyways. Now I'm not sure where we stand.

To try and get things back on track - shall we say harmonious - Adobe invited all of us minions here in Stockholm (and a host of other European cities) to come and listen to a seminar touting that which is grand in CS4. Everything is grand upon a new release of CS. Even old stuff is pretty grand...like a windowed application and tabs. I gave them 2+ hours of my morning to hear them out. The fact that the seminar was scheduled for 4 hours ought to tell you something.

There I sat, in the same place I sat 2 years ago for CS3, listening to the near science-fiction like qualities of this latest round of applications. (At this point I should mention that I still use CS2 at work, and picked up CS3 this past April for home...) The usual well rehearsed diatribe on all of the new things that will make my life easier. And as always how much faster Photoshop opens. Which, if you cram 12GB of RAM into a test computer isn't really saying a lot to those of us with a measly 4GB...or god forbid the suggested minimum of 1GB.

These seminars, and this one was no exception, tend not to focus on real world solutions but rather show hypothetical scenarios where the usage of new spectacular features are well warranted. The likes of which only a handful of us will use more than once - and that's just to test it out.

Let's face it, everyone uses Adobe's products differently, from the guy with a pirate copy of Photoshop to someone who works in a New York ad agency. Some people use layers in InDesign, some people don't know they even exist. There are those who actually set up multiple work spaces for each application when the rest of us really can't be bothered. It's the same across the board for all of their products and all the different options. The complexity creates a dependence on a personal familiarity (i.e. relationship) with every aspect of every different application. (In my case, much like my actual marriage, I get the bonus of dealing with it in two different languages...) Adobe knows this. And with every release they take two steps forward and one step back. Bridge gets more logical, the ties between all the applications get tighter, identical functions finally get the same names, and the menus, palettes, menulettes and what not get less and less intuitive. Some glitches seem never to get fixed, while more and more time is spent on things like visual file presentation. (I don't know what else to call it, but it seems like Adobe should just create their own OS if they can't be bothered to conform to the one they are building for. Bridge has become some sort of strange Finder demon child in CS4, with a bobzillion different ways to preview your images. More on that at 11.)

So, there I'm sitting. Staring at the gargantuan screen hoping that for once I am going to walk away both impressed and hopeful. Alas, it was not to be. Yes, there are some new things. Yes, they have listened to what people have had to say and tried to accommodate them with changes. Yes, Photoshop can now open a 15GB .JPG in under 5 minutes. And, once again, yes you can embed an interactive video file into a .PDF. (Why anyone needs to do this I don't know, but you can now do it.) Illustrator has transparencies in gradients now (for some reason InDesign still doesn't). No doubt Premiere has some nifty new things...but I didn't stay long enough to see them in action. After 2 hours the only thing I wanted to do was get out of there. To go home and get back to trying to get Adobe Updater to work so that I can update AI CS3 so that the stupid color picker will finally work properly. (Apparently I need to update Adobe Updater before I can proceed. However, to do so I need the latest version...) Because, to be honest, there is nothing new that you can't live without. Nothing new that you need to have. Nothing that is so revolutionary that it will make you go through the backwards compatibility issues with InDesign and Illustrator. And, believe me, no reason to upgrade when CS3 still feels like it came out over the summer. In fact the only reason I can see for upgrading to CS4 right now is if you are still using CS1 or lower.

Actually, there is one feature that would have left a better taste in my mouth. Something that would make "content awareness" look very cool indeed, that tabs would have been revolutionary, and that moving the location and appearance of the Appearance window would have had me drooling. This amazing feature: affordability. (That and maybe the removal of the web link on top of the Tools panel.) Seriously, I'm not sure if the prices are so astronomical because of the amount of pirated copies around, or the amount of pirated copies are because of the astronomical prices. For me to upgrade the Web Premium version would be $600. Which is actually more than what my version of CS3 cost. (I know this because I looked it up on Adobe's on-line store. Which is an incredible example of why full blown Flash based internet applications are not very popular.)

Perhaps, not for their own economical reasons, Adobe needs to rethink their pricing policy here. Would I pay $600 for just the new features? Umm...no. (Maybe if I was one of those people who were actually paying a company to convert my PDF's into Flash documents, since that $600 would be made up pretty quickly now that CS4 can do it for you.) It just can't be justified this time around for the core stuff I do. I'd rather the things I've already paid for worked better. That CS3 had some time to mature, that they resolved a number of standing bugs, that the everlasting Macintosh platform issues would be fixed. (Dirty trade secret here: it is very much possible that Adobe's products run with less hitches on a PC. I could go into details as to exactly what I'm talking about here, but suffice to say if you have a Mac you know already what I mean.) Simply put: don't build me a new roof when the basement is what's leaking. Flair and pomp aren't a decent trade off for stability and simple functionality.

No, Adobe, I won't be dumping you. What you do, you do it well. It's just maybe time to sit down and take a long look at who you are, not what you want to be. Perhaps take a cue from Apple and create a SnowCS. A release not based on new features but purely on better integration, less weight, speed, and overall stability. Fix the small things, Beta test the hell of it, and bat out all the dings before going further and further forward. We can still talk, and I guess we're still friends, I just want you to focus on you for a while.

    Eleven
Not actually off topic, and mentioned above, the issue with the Adobe interface on the Mac. Perhaps there is some underlying smart guy technical limits as to what can be achieved with OSX, but why on earth must Adobe continually change the GUI on their applications. (Bridge in particular.) Seriously, it's getting to the point where there should just be an Adobe OS that one can use to run all their programs. That may actually simplify things considering the overwhelming amount of inconsistencies when it comes to having a uniform appearance and controls. For that, Adobe, you can do the dishes.

Is this the World Series where it ends?

The first widget I ever made...and one that has thus far been an invaluable source of depression...may finally become devoid of use. (Something I've been hoping for since the moment I created it.) Unfortunately it won't explode in a shower of sparks or even reset...the Cheesesteak of Suffering will just keep counting uselessly up and up forever...

Let's go Phillies! Looks like you're our only hope this year...
